A Personal Reflection from Alesha Kollert, HOH Missionary
This past June, I celebrated three years working with Handfuls of Hope. As I look back on my time this past year I cannot help but be astounded by the Lord’s goodness and the generosity of so many of you. Without the Lord and your help, it would be impossible to accomplish what we are doing.
Some of the highlights from this past year at the school have been celebrating the Bible Month, Independence Day, and seeing our children exceed academically. During Bible month which is celebrated in September, the children learned all about the Bible and memorized up to eight verses. It was great to see our students not only memorizing the verses but putting them into practice in their daily lives. Each February we celebrate the Dominican Republic’s independence all month long and the students learn all about their founding fathers and how their country won their independence. We end the month-long celebration with a special ceremony and a march throughout the whole community. Many of the public schools are not able to do a march because they do not have the same resources that we have. So we invite them to march along with us. When I first started working with Handfuls of Hope we had over 80 students that were below their grade level academically. We brought in extra help and began doing summer school and after-school programs to bring them up to where they should be. Due to all of their hard work, we began this past school year with less than 20 below their grade level! Our goals for this past year exceeded academically and to see them come to the Lord and grow spiritually has been priceless.
I know the Lord is going to continue to bless this ministry because He does not stop doing His work with us. Here are just a few ways I have seen the Lord working these past few months. A few months ago we did not know where we were going to find Dominican coaches for our sports ministry and Dominican teachers for VBS. Well, the Lord worked and we now have more coaches than we know what to do with and we have over 20 volunteers to help with VBS! We also have a need for more Christian teachers for the new school year and the Lord has brought us several teachers that are willing to work with us. Praise God! I would ask that you continue to pray for us as our ministry continues to grow. Below are a few prayer requests.
For the health and logistics of our upcoming summer missions teams.
Summer Mission Trip - July 6-13
Youth Week - August 3-10
For the salvation of the children that we are ministering to through our summer missions teams and sports ministries.
For the salvation and spiritual growth of our students, their parents, and staff.
For the staff members, including myself, that recently lost loved ones. That the Lord would comfort us and give us the strength to carry on.
Thank you and God Bless,
Handfuls of Hope Missionary
Meet Jackie Araneo, Our New Director of Sports Ministries
I was raised in Union, New Jersey in a Christian family. While I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior at a young age, I feel that my faith and relationship with God have grown the most in the past few years. I went on my first short-term mission trip with Handfuls of Hope in August 2017 and spent the following summer helping the organization start its sports ministry for young children. After this experience, I felt God’s calling to become a full time missionary and now serve as the Director of Sports Ministries. I have a strong passion for sports and working with children and am excited to be able to use these interests as a way to serve God and share the gospel.
